Teacher Appreciation Week at TRS

It has been so sweet to see TRS students come to school and shower their teachers with thoughtful, heartfelt gifts! Language Arts Instructor, Mrs. Bliss Newell says she has received, “flowers, two handmade bracelets, a handmade pot holder, sweet notes, pictures, and homemade goodies [like] pretzels dipped in chocolate.”

This year, the week of May 3rd is Teacher Appreciation Week, and students have gone all out to express how much they appreciate their educators. “My favorite one I gave was the ultimate frisbee I gave to Mr. Gardner,” says Asher, a TRS fourth grader. Asher says he enjoys giving to his teachers because “I just feel like they are working all the time and they need to be appreciated, I like to give and see people who are happy.”

I think it is safe to say TRS educators have been overwhelmingly overjoyed by the outpouring of love to them this week. TRS Innovative Learning Strategist, Mrs. Leanna Range-Norwood did an absolutely wonderful job organizing the school’s Teacher Appreciation Week. She came up with a fun theme for each day and flooded our educators with lots of thoughtful and creatively packaged goodies!

Teacher Appreciation Week is prudent because generally speaking, society underappreciates educators, although they truly have one of the most challenging careers in the world. In many cases educators experience the fulfillment of their hard work immediately, but I imagine in most cases, the rewards are not realized until years down the line. TRS Math Instructor, Ms. Lisa Jenkins says as a teacher, it is most “rewarding seeing the lightbulb come on, seeing a child realize they are smarter than he or she thought and that they are capable of doing math, that is so exciting to start to see.”

As it relates to Teacher Appreciation Week, Ms. Jenkins says, “it’s been overwhelming, I’m going home with bags and bags,” of goodies each day. Ms. Jenkins also shares her gratitude for her fellow teachers, who she says are “amazing, encouraging Christians,” that have helped build her up and encourage her.

In addition to his ultimate frisbee from Asher, TRS Bible and History Instructor, Drew Gardner, an avid coffee drinker says he is also very appreciative of his gourmet ground coffee gift and several other thoughtful mementos.

TRS Science Teacher Mrs. Avious Metcalfe was touched seeing how her students took the time to observe her likes and dislikes, allowing them to treat her with many of her favorite things. “It makes me feel really good because I’m a little more strict and with that being said it feels really good and I feel appreciated,” says Mrs. Metcalfe.

TRS teachers... simply said, “you rock!” Your impact in the Jackson metro area is monumental. Your love for your students is beautifully sincere. Keep doing what you are doing. You are literally superheroes changing the world, positively making a difference each and every single day!
