Spelling Bee Spotlight: Casey Austin
TRS is proud to have a Spelling Champion in our midst! Sixth Grader Casey Austin recently competed and placed first in his grade group at the Schoolwide and Districtwide Spelling Bees, and advanced to and placed second in Sixth Grade at the MAIS Overall Spelling Bee. Casey went back and forth for 30 rounds with one other contestant, an impressive feat! We recently sat down with him to talk about his experience:
How did you start practicing for the Spelling Bee?
Casey: I would usually say the word, then spell the word, and then read over it to see if I spelled it correctly.
What is one of your favorite subjects in school?
Casey: While I’m good at English, my favorite subject is History because I like learning about the past.
How did you feel going into the Spelling Bee? Nervous or excited?
Casey: I’ve competed for the past four years now, and because I’ve been through it a lot, I felt OK about it.
What are some of your favorite parts about competing in the Spelling Bee?
Casey: Getting to compete with other smart kids, and just being able to be there.
For younger students who might want to enter a spelling bee one day, what is one piece of advice you would give them?
Casey: Always take your time and ask for the definition so you can hear if it makes sense.
