The Redeemer’s School Celebrates Discovery Week

Nick Wallace with TRS students.

Discovery Week is a highly anticipated annual week-long celebration of exploration, education, and creativity at TRS. This year, Discovery Week was May 13th-17th and featured local celebrities, a cultural fair, chef demonstration, mock trial, and finishing the week with a field day! Keydra Garner, Executive Assistant to the Head of School, said, "Both staff and students look forward to Discovery Week at the end of every academic year. It is a time to learn, experience, create, and explore! While there are typically many fun activities in store, we also make sure that students have an opportunity to potentially experience something new as well!"

Discovery Week is an excellent opportunity for our students to learn new and exciting things about our community, our state, and our world. It is a fun-filled and often eye-opening time! Ms. Garner notes, "There are many activities that are planned throughout the week, some targeting all students, and others directed to specific age groups. I hope that all students were able to experience something new that was enjoyable to them and perhaps aspirational as well. After our Mississippi Cowboy visit, several students relayed their interest in agriculture as it relates to our state.”

Below is a quick break down of the themes and features from the eventful week:

Day 1: ‘Go Green’ theme; a visit from first responders, Q&A session with members of the MS Braves, recycling presentation by Keep Jackson Beautiful

Day 2: 'On The Farm' theme; Mississippi Agriculture presentation with Cowboy Jones, seedling planting with Mrs. Henry, art stations with Mrs. Howell, K4/K5 Fashion Show

Day 3: 'Around The World' theme; African Drum and Dance Ensemble, Tasting demo with Chef Nick Wallace, Pop up cultural fair, DJing demo with 5th Child, Coffee Shop Sip & Learn with Mr. Akin, Sock Hop for K4-5th

Day 4: 'Go Wild' theme; Amazing Animal presentation with Snake Man Joe, art gallery, Mock Trial (4th-8th)

Day 5: Field Day!; Kickball - Students vs Staff, dodgeball, bouncy house/obstacle course, sharks and minnows, 3 on 3 basketball tournament, ice cream, popsicles, and so much more!

When asked what reflections from the past year she would like to add, Garner said, "While helping with after school carpool, one of the K4 students, Joi Patton remarked, "this was the best day ever!" Knowing that our students were able to learn, explore, create, and enjoy is really the best thing ever.”
