Our campus has been a flurry of activity this week, and we couldn’t be more excited to provide these exciting educational enhancements above and beyond the normal educational programs we offer each and every day!

This week, TRS celebrated Red Ribbon Week, competed in our last Cross Country Meet of the season, we hosted our annual Pumpkin Patch for our K4 - 2nd grade students, competed in the MAIS Chess Tournament at Hinds Community College, and hosted our school Spelling Bee. Here is a brief overview from some of the activities this week.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is recognized as the largest drug prevention campaign in the nation. A committee, chaired by 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Renee Henry, created a daily theme and fun activities associated with drug prevention. A coloring contest, a daily raffle, wearing red and crazy hair and silly socks day, are just a few of the ways students were encouraged to participate as they are learning about the importance of steering clear from drugs.

MAIS Chess Tournament

Thanks to TRS Student Activities & Logistics Coordinator, Mr. Robert Akin, for the first time ever, TRS students are being introduced to the game of chess formally as a school program. Several students are enrolled in a virtual course called “TRS Chess.” A program called Chess Kids, along with tutorial videos, other online resources and access to chess boards in classrooms, are exposing students to the game. On Thursday, October 28th, twelve of our students joined 15 other students for the MAIS Chess Tournament at the Clyde Muse Center on Hinds Community College Campus.

Oh, and by the way, out of 15 schools, TRS came in 2nd place for the Junior High age group!

“It helps develop a student's mental planning and problem-solving skills. We find it important to assess every possible way we can challenge our students to learn those all-important life skills of thinking a few steps ahead of your present circumstances and the decision in front of you in order to project potential outcomes or consequences. Chess has also proven helpful for students with ADHD, as it provides a place where students learn to focus in an environment that grounds them mentally, as well as physically.”

TRS Spelling Bee

We are also rooting on our 4th through 7th grade spellers! Students competed in classroom spelling bees on Tuesday October 26th, followed by the school spelling bee on Friday, October 29th. In an effort to prepare, students were given the spelling words to practice about three weeks ago. The winners of the school spelling bee will compete in the district spelling bee scheduled for December 1st at Jackson Prep.

In addition to being a valuable learning opportunity,
